Academy of Comparative Migration Studies

The Academy of Comparative Migration Studies (ACOMIS) will open its doors at the German Emigration Center in Bremerhaven in the summer of 2021. The academy is a non-university research facility and educational institute for museum education and "lifelong learning" offers. ACOMIS is linked to the German Emigration Center institutionally, which, in addition to its award-winning permanent exhibition, houses an extensive collection and reference library on the history of migration and integration.

The Research Performed by ACOMIS

... will concentrate on comparative migration research and focus on the areas of everyday, emotional and biographical history. The researchers will work in an interdisciplinary manner with the extensive collection and oral history archive at the German Emigration Center, which is currently being established. There are plans to cooperate with university and non-university institutes and institutions involved in migration and integration research – both nationally and internationally.

The ACOMIS Educational Institute

... has the task of communicating the history and present of integration and its significance in everyday life and society for children, young people and adults. The museum education provided by the German Emigration Center will offer various communication formats: school classes get to learn both factual and methodological skills in the area of intercultural education through exhibition and workshop projects. Teachers at schools and on integration courses receive training opportunities on German and European migration history. And for companies, authorities, associations and training institutions, the ACOMIS offers workshops on intercultural communication skills and teaching of German or European migration history.
